pebbles + herbs
pebbles + herbs is a botanical artist based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Her work is heavily influenced by nature and the sublime beauty it carries. Flowers and plants are her main medium. She believes in the importance of creating by hand, whether it’s pressing flowers to dry or hand printing cards or photographing plants in the wild. It is easy to get carried away trying to appear “green” these days but she tries to incorporate real sustainability in her work, making things in small batches and being mindful of the reciprocal relationship we should have with our surroundings.
When not creating, you can find her reading novels, listening to podcasts or video essays, and spending time with her family and two cats.
At HENG Roastery, we believe in supporting artists whose works and values resonate and align with ours. While pebbles + herbs celebrates the uniqueness in every flower and leaf, HENG Roastery pursues the individualism in each coffee. Every flower petal and each coffee cherry is special and beautiful.
Why does pebbles + herbs exist?
At its core, pebbles + herbs is a creative outlet for me that draws inspiration from the sublime beauty of plants.
I started pressing and drying flowers back in 2020, and worked with resin to preserve them. It was really well-received and I’m still really proud of the work I made back then, however, I have since decided to stop using resin for multiple reasons. I took a hiatus when I became a mother but am now returning to my personal projects.
Nowadays, I enjoy making botanical-themed stationery and am experimenting with various art forms such as hand printing, framed press flowers and book-binding.
What draws you to nature and botany in particular?
I believe I’m just trying to connect and be in relationship with our surroundings.
Humans are a part of nature but have become so disconnected in the past few generations. We went from living among trees and other creatures to hiding away in concrete boxes surrounded by plastic. I think it’s important not just to build relationships with other people, but also the animals, plants, and trees around us.
How do you make these cards and what makes them each unique?
These botanical monoprint cards are all individually hand printed with real plants and flowers, which means it’s made in very small batches and no two are exactly the same. It’s a very tactile and slow process, where I roll ink onto the flower or leaf and press it onto the card to transfer the ink over. It is quite experimental and sometimes the outcome surprises me too.
If you were a plant/flower, what would you be?
Probably a fern? Growing in a crevice somewhere, just doing its thing and minding its own business. I love how versatile and resilient they are, being an ancient plant that’s been around basically forever, and how diverse they are — growing in all shapes and sizes in different habitats.
